Le britannique John M. Roberts, vice-chancelier de l’université de Southampton, est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages de référence dont cette Histoire du Monde reste son maître livre. Quant à l’historien norvégien Odd Arne Westad, il enseigne l’histoire des relations internationales à la London School of Economics et est un expert mondialement reconnu de l’histoire de l’Asie.
Editée initialement en anglais, cette Histoire du Monde s’est vendue à plus d’un million d’exemplaires. Les éditions Perrin viennent d’en traduire et publier le premier tome. Les deux autres tomes sont prévus en librairie avant la fin de ce trimestre.
Ce premier volume sous-titré Les âges anciens s’ouvre sur la préhistoire et se conclut autour du VIème siècle. Il met en valeur les principales étapes du développement des civilisations sans jamais perdre de vue les grands événements qui l’ont impulsé.
Il s’agit d’une œuvre monumentale qui nous permet de suivre les premières traces de la civilisation sur les différents continents. Les deux auteurs de cette étude ont examiné les dernières découvertes archéologiques pour nous livrer la connaissance la plus à jour possible de la Mésopotamie ancienne, l’Egypte ancienne, les intrusions indo-européennes, les commencements de la civilisation en Asie du Sud et la Chine ancienne, sans oublier les autres mondes des Temps anciens. Nous passons ensuite à l’âge classique avec la description du monde hellénistique, de la civilisation romaine, la naissance du christianisme et la transition occidentale, l’Inde classique et la Chine classique.
Cette Histoire du Monde se révèle très utile pour observer et comparer l’histoire des civilisations sur toute la surface de la planète.
