Catherine Rouvier est docteur d’Etat en droit public et en science politique de l’université Paris II (Panthéon-Assas) et maître de conférences à l’université de Paris XI (Orsay).
Cet ouvrage est une réédition augmentée et enrichie de sa thèse d’histoire des idées politiques sur Gustave Le Bon, parue initialement aux Presses Universitaires de France (PUF) en 1986 avec une préface d’Edgar Faure et qui reçut le prix Fabien de morale et de sociologie de l’Académie française.
Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931), médecin, anthropologue, psychologue social et sociologue, est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages parmi lesquels il faut particulièrement retenir Psychologie des foules paru pour la première fois en 1895 et qui reste pleinement d’actualité. Il y a méthodiquement et rigoureusement décrit les mécanismes utilisés hier, aujourd’hui et probablement encore demain, pour manipuler les foules.
Le livre de Catherine Rouvier examine la pensée de Gustave Le Bon à ce sujet et tente d’en tirer des leçons.
