Etats-Unis – Le 22 décembre, pour la première fois dans l’histoire des Etats-Unis, une femme de la communauté juive hassidique est devenue juge dans un tribunal américain.
Ce jour-là, Rachel Freier a prêté serment en temps que juge au Tribunal civil dans l’État de New York. Au cours de cette petite cérémonie officielle, un « God Bless America » en yiddish a retenti dans le tribunal, entonné par le chanteur Lipa Schmeltzer.
Rachel ‘Ruchie’ Freier est ainsi devenue juge au Tribunal civil du cinquième district du comté de Kings et son mandat durera jusqu’en 2027.
Rachel Freier, mère de 6 enfants (et grand-mère), est la fondatrice de deux organisations qui l’ont rendue célèbre dans la communauté hassidique. La première, B’Derech, est un programme académique qui aide les hommes juifs ultra-orthodoxes n’ayant fréquenté que des écoles religieuses – les yeshivot – à obtenir une équivalence au diplôme de fins d’études pour pouvoir accéder à l’enseignement supérieur.
La seconde, Ezras Nashim, est un programme de secourisme hassidique disposant de ses propres ambulances et exclusivement réservé à secourir des femmes !
