Etats-Unis – Les étudiants qui ont obtenu leur diplôme cette année à East Liverpool High School en Ohio ont défié le laïcisme ambiant.
Après une menace de l’association laïciste Freedom from Religion Foundation, les autorités de l’institution avaient décidé de supprimer le traditionnel Notre Père récité depuis 70 ans lors de la remise des diplômes.
« Nous avons estimé que nous n’avons pas beaucoup d’argent et qu’il est préférable de consacrer cet argent à payer des enseignants plutôt qu’à payer des avocats», avait déclaré Larry Walton, président du conseil d’administration de l’école, pour justifier cet abandon.
Mais, lors de la cérémonie de remise des diplômes, lorsque le major de promotion, Jonathan Montgomery, a terminé son discours, avec un geste complice aux autres diplômés, il les a invités à se lever et a commencé à réciter le Notre Père, défiant l’interdiction et provoquant l’embarras de certains membres de la commission scolaire.
Les applaudissements qui ont suivi la prière ont été fracassants.
« C’était tout à fait spontané, je ne savais pas que cela se passerait ainsi », a commenté la directrice de l’institution, Melissa Watson.
