Jean-Christophe Notin est l’auteur de plusieurs ouvrages d’histoire militaire. En 2008, il avait publié une biographie du Maréchal Foch. Dix ans après, en cette année du centenaire de l’armistice de 1918, il publie chez Perrin une nouvelle édition revue et augmentée de cet ouvrage.
Les commémorations du centenaire de la Première Guerre mondiale se terminent alors qu’il ne survit plus aucun ancien soldat ayant pu croiser le Maréchal Foch (1851-1929). Seul l’historien peut donc rappeler la popularité dont jouissait Foch, commandant en chef des forces alliées, maréchal de France, du Royaume-Uni et de Pologne, au soir du 11 novembre 1918. Mais ce livre n’est pas une hagiographie du héros de la Grande Guerre. L’auteur a voulu aborder tous les aspects du personnage. Et nous faire découvrir comment ce professeur de l’Ecole de guerre a pris la tête d’un corps d’armée en 1914, à 63 ans, sans avoir jamais combattu, commettant de tragiques erreurs pendant trois ans, mais ayant une capacité à surmonter ses propres faiblesses. Eloigné des champs de bataille où il n’avait guère brillé, il s’est révélé un fédérateur d’énergies sans pareil, salutaire, inlassable. Foch, fervent catholique, n’a jamais douté de la victoire et eut le don de communiquer cette espérance à ses semblables. Ce livre nous rappelle également que si les politiques l’avaient écouté, la guerre se serait terminée plus tard car Foch voulait terrasser définitivement l’Allemagne en marchant sur Berlin.
La conclusion de cette biographie montre les paradoxes du personnage. Ses enseignements à l’Ecole de guerre ont plus conduit à la défaite de 1914 qu’ils n’ont préparé la victoire de 1918. Foch s’est révélé, au dire de ses propres subordonnés, un piètre tacticien et un stratège pas toujours avisé. Mais comme le releva le Maréchal Pétain, les « qualités maîtresses » de Foch furent « la volonté, la confiance en soi, l’énergie indomptable ».
