On imagine l’état de New-York, et on visualise les zones marchandes de Buffalo ou Albany, les rues de New-York, avec les McDonald’s, les Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King, Applebee’s, Wendy’s, Taco Bell, Subway, Pizza Hut, Domino’s Pizza et autres… On imagine l’Oklahoma, avec ses petits restaurants de routiers le longs d’improbables nationales…
Pourtant, alors qu’un jeune américain sur trois mange chaque jour au fastfood, la réalité est l’inverse des préjugés : ce sont les états les plus ruraux où ce type d’établissements est le plus nombreux, comme un cercle concentrique centré sur le cœur du pays
- 4 états américains, symboles de l’Amérique profonde, comptent entre 40 et 45 fastfoods pour 100.000 habitants : le Kansas, l’Oklahoma, l’Arkansas et bien sûr le Kentucky (berceau de KFC)
- 14 états, tous aussi ruraux, comptent entre 35 et 40 fastfoods et entourent les 4 précédents : Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiane, Mississippi, Géorgie, Caroline du Sud, Tennessee, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Indiana et Ohio.
- 15 états, le reste de l’Amérique rurale, comptent entre 30 et 35 fastfoods et entourent les 14 précédents : Hawaï, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, Dakota du Nord, Dakota du Sud, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Virginie Occidentale, Alabama, Floride, Caroline du Nord, Virginie.
- 7 états, complétant la carte des Etats-Unis sauf la Nouvelle-Angleterre, comptent entre 25 et 30 fastfoods : Washington, Oregon, Californie, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Delaware plus le District of Columbia.
- 5 états en comptent entre 20 et 25 : Alaska, Pennsylvanie, New Jersey, Connecticut et Rhode Island.
- Reste 5 états, tous limitrophes et situés dans la Nouvelle-Angleterre, comptant entre 15 et 20 fastfoods : New York, New Hampshire, Massachussetts, Vermont et Maine.
Notons, puisqu’on parle de Mc Donald’s, que la France est le 2e pays qui en compte le plus derrière les Etats-Unis avec 1380 restaurants en 2015, probablement maintenant plus de 1400 (La Primaube dans l’Aveyron, La Souterraine dans la Creuse, Ribéac en Dordogne et Pignan dans l’Hérault ont ainsi ouvert pour le seul mois de décembre 2016, un est en cours d’ouverture à la Gare Montparnasse à Paris, remplaçant le Quick), le premier ayant ouvert à Créteil en 1972. Parfois, il arrive aussi qu’un Mc Donald’s ferme : celui de Montreynaud dans la Loire en 2016… Aux Etats-Unis, comme Detroit l’a montré, on dit d’un quartier qu’il est devenu sinistré le jour où même le McDonald’s a fermé ses portes…
