Une sanglante fusillade a eu lieu dimanche 5 novembre au cours d’une cérémonie protestante dans le temple de la First Baptist Church à Sutherland Spring, au Texas, tuant 26 personnes et en blessant 27, c’est à dire la quasi-totalité des fidèles présents, dont la propre fille du pasteur, Annabelle Pomeroy, 14 ans, tombée sous les balles du tueur. L’assassin est un ancien rampant de l’armée de l’air américaine – servant à la base de Holloman (Nouveau-Mexique) – Devin Patrick Kelley, 26 ans. Il a été liquidé par l’un des paroissiens, Stephen Willford, un plombier de 55 ans qui, l’a pris en chasse avec sa voiture et, comme dans un bon film de cow-boys, a descendu l’outlaw à la fin. Il était accompagné dans sa traque par Johnnie Lagendoff, dont les tirs ont permis la sortie de route du véhicule du tueur de masse.
Kelley avait été viré de l’armée en 2014 pour violence domestique avec récidive, après être passé une première fois en cour martiale et dégradé en 2012. Il vivait dans la ville de New Braunfels. Ces anciens condisciples au lycée le considéraient comme un cinglé, totalement effrayant. Il s’était engagé dans l’armée en 2010 pendant son service militaire et y manifestait un prosélytisme athée, ce que confirme une autre ancienne de son école, Nina Rose Nava : « Il disait toujours que les gens qui croyaient en Dieu étaient des abrutis et il essayait de prêcher l’athéisme ».
Outre la fille du pasteur, parmi les victimes identifiées on compte le pasteur invité pour le sermon (Franck Pomeroy étant absent) Bryan Holcolmbe, sa femme Karla et sa bru enceinte Crystal, une mère de famille de 4 enfants (Joann Ward) et deux de ses fillettes de 6 et 9 ans (Brooke et Emily) et une adolescente de 123 ans, Amanda Mosel.
Le casier judiciaire du tueur était vierge, si on excepte des infractions au code de la route. Plus d’informations quand nous aurons analysé la totalité des dépêches.
