Après le sommet de l’Otan de mardi dernier, Donald Trump s’est rendu sur l’île britannique où il a rencontré Theresa May et ensuite la reine du Royaume-Uni, Elizabeth II. Avant de rejoindre Helsinki, en Suède, pour le sommet de lundi prochain avec Vladimir Poutine, le tycoon et son épouse ont décidé d’aller faire un tour en Écosse. Ils passeront leur week-end dans leur hôtel de Turnberry, au sud-ouest de Glasgow.
Il s’agit d’une visite privée, sans rencontres officielles. Mais la visite de Trump ne peut passer inaperçue. Après les protestations contre sa venue qui ont eu lieu hier à Londres, d’autres manifestations sont prévues à Édimbourg de la part des opposants écossais à la politique migratoire américaine et au Brexit.
La première a contesté Trump a été le premier ministre écossais Nicole Sturgeon. Fortement critique envers le président américain et soutien actif de la campagne anti-Brexit, elle a décidé de ne pas accueillir le couple présidentiel : à les attendre à l’aéroport il n’y avait que quelques représentants du gouvernement britannique. Nicole Sturgeon a préféré aller participer à la GayPride de Glasgow !
