L’épidémie d’Ebola en cours en Afrique de l’Ouest est plus meurtrière jamais. Environ 60 pour cent des patients contaminés sont aujourd’hui décédés. Le déroulement et l’issue de la maladie dépendent de la variante du virus. C’est du moins ce qu’on pensait jusqu’à présent. Mais une nouvelle étude américaine montre que les facteurs génétiques sont déterminants.
La façon dont le virus frappe, varie de patient à patient. Des études ont montré que ces variations quant à l’issue mortelle ou non sont sans rapport avec les mutations du virus lui-même. La gravité de la maladie semble être déterminée par les tentatives du corps à combattre l’infection.
Une étude menée par les universités de Washington et de Caroline du Nord ainsi que par le National Institutes of Health sur des souris suggère que les facteurs génétiques permettent d’expliquer ce large spectre de réactions diverses face au virus Ebola.
