Thierry Lassabatère, docteur en histoire médiévale, avait déjà publié de nombreux articles consacrés à la tradition littéraire du personnage de Bertrand Du Guesclin. C’est donc tout naturellement qu’il s’est mis à rédiger ce « pavé » racontant la vie du vaillant connétable ayant chassé les Anglais du royaume de France.
Bertrand Du Guesclin est un véritable mythe, symbole du héros qui dépasse sa vie d’homme. Une enfance mal-aimée, ses exploits lors des sièges de Rennes et de Melun, ses batailles les plus marquantes, à Cocherel, Auray et Najera, la capture du roi de Castille Pierre le Cruel à Montiel, la nomination de Du Guesclin comme connétable, ses grandes batailles et ses grands sièges pendant la reconquête, enfin sa mort devant les remparts de Châteauneuf-de-Randon, sont autant d’épisodes devenus pour nous des images d’Epinal. Sa légende se forge de son vivant. Le connétable de Charles V incarne le service de l’Etat, le patriotisme et la nation. Ses funérailles sont organisées en grande pompe par la monarchie en 1389. Selon la volonté du roi, le gisant du héros sera installé aux pieds de celui de Charles V.
Thierry Lassabatère s’emploie à comprendre comment s’est construite cette légende entourant Du Guesclin. Sa relation avec le roi, avec la société militaire, son exercice de la fonction de connétable, sa valeur militaire, sont examinés par l’auteur, de même que la part littéraire, « romanesque », qui a contribué à la dimension mythique de Du Guesclin.
