Historique poignée de main entre Trump et François, sur fond de murs et de ponts !
Le Vatican est la nouvelle étape du voyage international de Donald Trump. Après l’Arabie Saoudite et Israël, le président des États-Unis était reçu ce matin en audience par le pape François dans les Palais Apostoliques.
Après les affrontements à distance, surtout sur le thème du mur du Mexique et l’accueil des migrants, The Donald et le pape François se sont rencontrés et serrés la main. Souriants. Le président américain est arrivé accompagné de sa femme Melanie, de sa fille Ivanka et de son gendre Jared Kushner, avec un long cortège formé d’une quarantaine de voitures blindées.
Après les photographies rituelles, Trump et François se sont retrouvés dans la bibliothèque du Pontife pour un colloque privé qui a duré un peu moins d’une demi-heure. « Je vous remercie infiniment » a dit Trump au pape. « C’est un très grand honneur » a-t-il rajouté avant d’entrer dans la pièce privée.
Ce n’est qu’ensuite que Jorge Maria Bergoglio a serré la main de Melanie et Ivanka, toutes deux habillées de noir et une mantille sur la tête, comme le veut le protocole. Puis il a béni un chapelet que la First Lady, catholique, lui a montré. Tout de suite après Donald Trump a rencontré le cardinal secrétaire d’État Pietro Parolin avec monseigneur Paul Richard Gallagher, secrétaire pour les rapports avec les États.
Pour le traditionnel échange de cadeaux, le Pontife a offert au couple américain ses cadeaux habituels : ses encycliques « Evagelii gaudium », « Laudato sì » et « Amoris Laetitia ». Au président américain il a également offert son message pour la journée de la paix et la médaille représentant l’olivier de la paix.
De son côté, Trump a donné un cadeau convenant parfaitement à Jorge Bergoglio. « Ceci est un cadeau pour vous, ce sont les livres de Martin Luther King » a déclaré Trump en présentant au pape François un recueil des livres du leader historique des droits des afro-américains, prix Nobel de la Paix assassiné à Memphis en 1968.
Des échanges de présents très corrects…
La journée du président des États-Unis dans la ville éternelle sera bien remplie d’obligations institutionnelles puisqu’il doit également rencontré ce matin Sergio Mattarella, le président de la République italienne, et Paolo Gentiloni, le président du Conseil (équivalent du premier ministre français).
