En ayant recours à une formule peu conventionnelle, Donald Trump a confirmé que son premier déplacement à l’étranger

« en tant que président des États-Unis sera en Arabie saoudite, puis en Israël, puis dans un endroit que mes cardinaux aiment vraiment beaucoup, Rome .»

Le nouveau président des États-Unis, qui semblent avoir enrôlé les princes-cardinaux de l’Église dans son administration, sera reçu par le pape François le 24 mais prochain. Cette audience intervient lors du premier voyage de Trump en Europe où il est convenu qu’il se rendra à Bruxelles pour le sommet de l’Otan le jeudi 25 mai et ensuite au G7 de Taormina en Sicile.

Le programme de sa visite au Vatican est déjà fixé : l’audience avec le pontife aura lieu aux Palais Apostoliques à 8 h 30. Ensuite, Trump rencontrera le cardinal Pietro Parolin, secrétaire d’État, accompagné par monseigneur Paul Gallagher, secrétaire pour les rapports avec les États.

Les rapports entre le Tycoon devenu président et le pape François n’ont pas été placés sous le signe de la bonne entente cordiale : le mur anti-migrants voulu par Trump entre son pays et le Mexique a dressé un mur entre les deux hommes ! Interrogé en février 2016 sur cette promesse de campagne du futur président américain, le pape avait déclaré durement :

«Une personne qui veut construire des murs et non des ponts n’est pas chrétienne».

De quoi faire bondir l’impétueux Donald, très ressemblant en cela à l’emblématique canard américain de Walt Disney, qui avait répondu du tac-au-tac en jugeant «honteux» qu’un responsable religieux «mette en doute la foi d’une personne».

«Le pape n’a entendu qu’une version de l’histoire, il n’a pas vu la criminalité, le trafic de drogues et l’impact économique négatif que les politiques actuelles ont sur les États-Unis»,

avait insisté M. Trump. Après la messe très médiatisée célébrée par El pape argentin aux confins du Mexique et des États-Unis, entre Ciudad Juarez et el Paso, le magnat de l’immobilier avait défini l’évêque de Rome

« comme une personne très politique » qui « ne comprend pas les problèmes qu’a notre pays » et « le danger de la frontière ouverte que nous avons avec le Mexique ».

Depuis que Trump a été élu, en revanche le pape François n’a plus eu de commentaires désobligeants, diplomatie oblige. Il a d’ailleurs affirmé récemment qu’il reçoit tout homme d’État qui lui demande audience.

La rencontre entre ces deux hommes diamétralement à l’opposé sur les questions de l’immigration, de l’accueil inconditionnel de tous les migrants et de l’ouverture des frontières, est donc maintenant officielle. Le pape François saura-t-il « construire un pont » avec Donald  Trump ?
