André-Arnaud Fourny, spécialiste en charge de la boxe pour le journal L’Equipe depuis 1982, a couvert les plus grands combats modernes dans le monde entier et rencontré les plus prestigieux champions, y compris ces géants du passé qui nous ont quittés : Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Jake LaMotta, Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Emile Griffith, Carlos Monzon, Rodrigo Valdez… Il était donc tout désigné pour rédiger ce Dictionnaire de la boxe publié par les éditions Perrin.
Bien des livres sont sortis en France sur ce sport, que ce soit des biographies, des récits sur l’histoire du ring en général, des manuels de technique ou des recueils d’anecdotes. Mais il n’y avait jusqu’ici aucun dictionnaire permettant de comprendre immédiatement l’importance de tel boxeur, organisateur, manager, de telle nation ou de tel événement, allant des combats truqués au match ayant connu le plus grand nombre de spectateurs. C’est donc enfin chose faite avec ce premier dictionnaire dédié au « noble art ». Il rassemble tous les univers du ring, y compris sa présence au cinéma, dans la littérature et les arts. Un dictionnaire soucieux de contourner les histoires fausses, souvent sorties de l’imagination débordante de managers désirant faire parler de leurs boxeurs.
