Lucien Rebatet (1903-1972) est un écrivain, journaliste et critique musical et cinématographique français.

Ayant débuté à l’Action française, il rejoint en 1932 l’hebdomadaire Je suis partout. Arrêté le 8 mai 1945, il est condamné à mort mais différents écrivains, de Camus à Mauriac, se mobilisent pour obtenir qu’il soit gracié. Il reste en prison jusqu’en 1952. Il se consacre ensuite à la critique cinématographique et reprend sa plume de journaliste pour Dimanche Matin, Spectacle du Monde, Valeurs Actuelles et Rivarol. Il publie également en 1951 Les Deux Étendards.

Pierre-Antoine Cousteau (1906-1958) est un journaliste et écrivain français, frère de l’océanographe Jacques-Yves Cousteau. A ses débuts, il est « à l’extrême gauche de l’extrême gauche » (selon ce qu’il dit lui-même dans En ce temps-là) et « le plus voltairien de nous tous » (dixit Lucien Rebatet). Il est aussi un pacifiste convaincu. En avril 1932, Pierre Gaxotte le fait rentrer à la rédaction de Je suis partout, journal auquel il participe activement, en compagnie de Lucien Rebatet et de Robert Brasillach auquel il succède en 1943, prenant la direction du journal.

Arrêté à la Libération, il assume ses actes et ses opinions lors de son procès en 1946 au cours duquel l’écrivain Jacques Yonnet, résistant, membre du Parti communiste français, vient témoigner à décharge et déclare : « C’était un ennemi loyal ». Condamné à mort, sa peine est commuée en travaux forcés à perpétuité grâce à l’intervention de personnalités du monde littéraire ((Marcel Aymé, Jean Anouilh, Jean Galtier-Boissière, André Gide et Albert Camus,…). Il purge sa peine à la prison de Clairvaux. Il est gracié en 1953 par Vincent Auriol. Libéré, Pierre-Antoine Cousteau écrit pour l’hebdomadaire Rivarol et la revue Lectures françaises. Il publie également quelques nouveaux livres. À sa mort des suites d’un cancer en 1958, Le Monde écrit : « Fidèle à son passé, à ses idées et à ses amis, Pierre-Antoine Cousteau n’avait rien perdu de son talent de polémiste ».

Le livre Dialogues de « vaincus » – que rééditent les éditions Omnia Veritas – est la retranscription de vingt dialogues que les deux compères pamphlétaires ont échangés au long de l’année 1950 dans l’atelier de lingerie et à la bibliothèque de la Maison centrale de Clairvaux, leur prison. Il en émane une même conviction que ni le doute ni le remords n’ont entamée.
