Aux Etats-Unis, c’est actuellement la période durant laquelle les élèves de terminale préparent leurs dossiers d’inscription à l’université. Beaucoup dévoilent leur orientation sexuelle sur des sites Internet dans le but de décrocher une bourse, grâce à des sites comme Scholarships.com, qui promet « Nous pouvons vous aider à trouver de l’argent pour l’école ». Pour cela, ils se créent un compte avec leurs données personnelles : nom, situation familiale etc… On a une catégorie nommée « Autres attributs, intérêts et détails » qui précise l’orientation sexuelle « Lesbien/Gay/ Bisexuel/ Transsexuel (LGBT) ou de parents LGBT ». On compte 236 000 élèves identifiés comme lesbiens, gays, bisexuels et transsexuels. Larry Gerber, le président du site Scholarship.com, explique « Des étudiants homosexuels peuvent avoir des bourses basées sur leur identité sexuelle. Environ 50 000 visiteurs se rendent sur le site chaque jour et 80% décident de s’inscrire pour partager leurs données personnelles ». Mais ensuite ses listes sont vendues via American Student Marketing. Une autre agence, la Novo Marketing aurait ainsi une liste de 1,9 million d’homosexuels.
