Claude Lanzmann est décédé ce 5 juillet 2018. Il était né dans une famille dont les différentes branches sont originaires des communautés juives de l’est de l’Europe, immigrées en France à la fin du xixe siècle.
À 18 ans, il devient membre des Jeunesses communistes.
Profondément marqué par la parution des Réflexions sur la question juive de Sartre en 1947, il fait son premier voyage en Israël en 1952.
À son retour en France, il devient pigiste pour France Dimanche, dans le groupe de presse de Pierre Lazareff pendant vingt ans, ainsi que pour le magazine Elle, créé et dirigé par Hélène Lazareff, et pour France-Soir avant de publier dans le journal Le Monde. Sartre lui demande alors de collaborer à sa revue Les Temps modernes.
À partir de juillet 1952, il vit une histoire d’amour avec Simone de Beauvoir, dont il reste le compagnon jusqu’à leur rupture en 1959. Il demeurera toujours très proche d’elle jusqu’à sa mort en 1986.
En 1987, malgré les évidences, Lanzmann, ancien membre des Jeunesses communistes, qualifie dans Les Temps Modernes l’attribution du massacre de Katyń aux Soviétiques de « propagande nazie ».
À partir de 1970, Claude Lanzmann se consacre au cinéma. Son premier film, Pourquoi Israël, sort en 1973. Ensuite, Lanzmann se plonge dans la réalisation de Shoah et y consacre 12 ans de travail. Neuf ans plus tard, en 1994, il sort le film Tsahal à la gloire de l’armée israélienne.
Dans le quotidien Libération, le 6 mars 2007, Claude Lanzmann « accuse Raymond Barre d’être antisémite ».
En 2011, il publie un numéro spécial des Temps Modernes sur les anciens harkis, où il revient sur des propos tenus en 1961, les appelant « les chiens de l’humaniste Papon ».
Le 19 octobre 2017, la journaliste néerlandaise Joyce Roodnat accuse Claude Lanzmann de l’avoir agressée sexuellement alors qu’elle l’interviewait en 1985 au sujet du film Shoah. Le même jour, à l’émission télévisée Pauw, elle affirme avoir appris que Claude Lanzmann s’était conduit de la même façon envers deux autres femmes journalistes.
