Le comédien Roger Jacob Lévy, dit Roger Hanin, était le quatrième des cinq enfants de Joseph Lévy et Victorine Hanin, famille qui vivait dans la basse casbah d’Alger avant de s’installer à Bab El Oued. Son grand-père Salomon Lévy était rabbin et employé de mairie.
« Mon vrai nom, c’est Lévy. Mon père s’appelle Joseph Lévy. Ma mère, Victorine Hanin. À l’origine c’était Ben Hanine. C’est une fille Azoulay. Je suis cent pour cent casher sur le plan génétique. Je suis fils de communiste et petit-fils de rabbin. Je me sens très juif. »

En 1959, il épouse la productrice de cinéma Christine Gouze-Rénal, sœur aînée de Danielle Mitterrand, devenant ainsi le « beau-frère » du Président François Mitterrand.
« En 1984, il a même pris sur lui de faire libérer un petit casseur de la communauté juive du Marais. Maurice Rosenfeld avait été convaincu d’avoir troublé l’ordre public. Convaincu quant à lui qu’il s’agissait d’une bavure, l’officiel beau-frère avait appelé directement Franceschi, alors secrétaire d’État à la Sécurité. C’est qu’il n’hésite pas à aller au charbon le Beauf ! » (Les dossiers du Canard, novembre 1991)
Dans le livre Lettre à un ami mystérieux (Grasset, 2001), Roger Hanin, grand ami du CRIF, raconte (pp 31-32) un dîner avec François Mitterrand au cours duquel il dit avec regret au président :
« Les Juifs sont en train de se diluer… Si l’on excepte les milieux religieux, la plupart des Juifs épousent des Françaises catholiques, protestantes, bref non juives… »
Sa carrière d’acteur avait fait de lui un communiste (il adhère au PCF en août 2003) multimillionnaire. Le rôle de Navarro avait assuré sa fortune. La série télévisée ne manquait pas de messages politiques : caricatures des « commandos » anti-avortement ou des méchants racistes…
Roger Hanin était membre du comité d’honneur de l’Association pour le droit de mourir dans la dignité (ADMD) et avait cosigné en 2009 un texte réclamant la dépénalisation de l’euthanasie.
