L’historien catholique Jean de Viguerie a été rappelé à Dieu ce dimanche 15 décembre 2019.
Né à Rome en 1935, agrégé d’histoire en 1959, docteur d’Etat en 1973, il avait été professeur de l’université Lille III et, dans le livre Itinéraire d’un historien, témoignait de ses déboires personnels dans le milieu universitaire pour n’avoir pas été marxiste et ne s’être jamais non plus soumis « aux dogmes du structuralisme et du sociologisme dominants ».
Dès 1968, Jean de Viguerie dénonçait la subversion soixante-huitarde vécue à la Sorbonne. Auteur contre-révolutionnaire, il avait obtenu en 1976 le Prix Marcelin Guérin de l’Académie française pour sa thèse Une œuvre d’éducation sous l’Ancien Régime : les Pères de la Doctrine chrétienne en France et en Italie, 1592-1792, (publications de la Sorbonne, éditions de la Nouvelle Aurore). Parmi ses livres à relire, on retiendra particulièrement Le Catholicisme des Français dans l’ancienne France (Nouvelles Editions Latines, 1988), L’Eglise et l’Education (éditions Dominique Martin Morin, 2001, réédition en 2010) et Les Deux Patries : essai historique sur l’idée de patrie en France (éditions Dominique Martin Morin, 1998, réédition augmentée 2018). Il avait également contribué au Livre noir de la Révolution française publié en 2008.
En 1992, Jean de Viguerie avait accepté d’être membre du conseil scientifique du Front National à l’époque où celui-ci comptait encore de nombreux catholiques contre-révolutionnaires. Plus récemment, il figurait parmi le comité de parrainage du défilé d’hommage à Sainte Jeanne d’Arc organisé par Civitas. Il animait également la Société française d’histoire des idées et d’histoire religieuse et avait présidé l’association Magnificat.
La France perd un grand intellectuel. Nourrissons-nous de ses travaux et prions pour lui.
