Le général Godefroid Niyombaré était récemment chef d’état major de l’armée burundaise, mais il avait été limogé par Pierre Nkurunziza parce qu’il lui avait déconseillé de ne pas briguer un 3e mandat conformément à la Constitution. Ce 14 mai, sur une radio privée, il a déclaré : « Le président Pierre Nkurunziza est destitué de ses fonctions, le gouvernement est dissous« . Il affirme de plus sa volonté d’une « reprise du processus électoral« . « Il est institué un comité pour le rétablissement de la concorde nationale, temporaire et ayant pour mission entres autres le rétablissement de l’unité nationale » et « la reprise du processus électoral dans un climat serein et équitable« , a-t-il ajouté.
Cette information est tombée comme un coup de tonnerre et a suscité plusieurs réactions. Selon Radio France internationale « des milliers de manifestants tentent de converger vers le centre-ville, des tirs sont toujours entendus vers la radio nationale. Des centaines de manifestants sont bloqués à proximité par des militaires et des militaires sont déployés autour de la radiotélévision publique à Bujumbura. Des militaires qui se disent fidèles au régime de Nkurunziza, selon notre envoyée spéciale sur place. » Mais la présidence burundaise, par le biais d’un tweet, annonce que la situation est maîtrisée et que le coup d’Etat a échoué. Notons que Pierre Nkurunzinza se trouve présentement à Dar es salam où devrait avoir lieu un sommet sur la crise au Burundi. Affaire à suivre.
