Totalement éradiqué suite au crash aérien du 29 novembre 2016  alors qu’il allait disputer la finale de la Copa Sudamericana, l’AF Chapecoense renaît de ses cendres en ayant gagné la première manche de la Recopa Sudamericana, l’équivalent latino-américain de la Supercoupe d’Europe en battant 2 à 1 les Colombien de l’Atletico National le 4 avril 2017, grâce à des buts de l’arrière-gauche Reinaldo sur pénalty à la 23^e minute et du défenseur central Luiz Otavio à la 74^e minute (les Colombiens ayant égalisé à la 59^e minute par Macnelly Torres).

A l’intersaison, 22 nouveaux joueurs ont été recrutés pour remplacer les morts et ceux qui ne pourront plus jamais jouer (le gardien Jackson a été amputé de la jambe). Deux de ces joueurs sont des anciens pensionnaires de Ligue 1, l’avant-centre Tulio De Melo, prêté par Recife mais ayant joué au Mans de 2005 à 2008 (80 match joués, 22 buts marqués), à Lille de 2008 à 2014 (136 matchs joués, 30 buts marqués) et à Evian (5 matchs joués, 1 but marqué) et l’arrière droit Apodi qui a fait un passage par Bastia sans jouer.

Contre l’Atletico, Chapecoense alignait dans les buts l’italo-brésilien Artur Moraes, 1 sélection en équipe du Brésil, venu du club turc d’Osmanlisport et ancien de l’AS Roma et Benfica. En défense, l’arrière droit Luiz Diallisson de Souza Alves dit « Apodi », de retour  du club russe du Kuban Krasnodar où il avait été transféré depuis Chapecoense en 2016 ; les défenseurs centraux Nathan Raphael Pelae Cardoso (prêté par Palmeiras) et Douglas Grolli (prêté par Cruzeiro) et l’arrière gauche Reinaldo Manoel da Silva (prêté par Sao Paulo). En milieu défensif, Anredi Girotto venu de Tombense. En attaque, l’ailier droit Rosicley Pereira da Silva dit « Rossi » (prêté par Goias), les milieux offensifs João Pedro (prêté par Palmeiras) et Luiz Antônio (prêté par Flamengo), l’ailier gauche Arthur Caíque do Nascimento Cruz (prêté par Londrina) et l’avant-centre Tulio De Melo déjà cité. Sont entrés en cours de jeu : le défenseur central Luiz Otávio da Silva Santos (prêté par Luverdense), le milieu défensif Moisés Ribeiro (de retour de prêt de Linense) et l’avant-centre Wellington Pereira do Nascimento dit « Wellington Paulista » (prêté par Fluminense).

Le match retour aura lieu le 11 mai, donnant l’occasion aux Verts de Chapecoense de gagner un second titre, toujours en Colombie mais cette fois sur le terrain, et de succéder aux Argentins de River Plate.
