François Montgisard, diplômé d’études politiques, docteur en histoire du droit, est un spécialiste de l’expansion territoriale européenne outre-mer.
Il s’attache ici à recenser tous les territoires étrangers qui, à un moment de leur histoire, furent sous l’autorité de fait ou de droit d’un dirigeant issu du groupe que l’on désigne du nom d’ « ethnie française ». Si les territoires colonisés par la France au cours de l’histoire sont globalement connus pour les plus importants d’entre eux, il n’en est pas de même pour les pays dirigés par des personnes d’origine française, qu’elles aient gardé ou non leur nationalité. A plus forte raison, aucune synthèse sur le thème présenté ici n’avait encore été réalisée.
Ce livre nous invite donc à voyager dans le temps et sur les cinq continents et à découvrir un rayonnement français insoupçonné.
Aider à mieux comprendre comment les Français ont su régner sur le monde est important en un temps où parfois le dénigrement prend la place de l’exaltation des nobles idéaux et de l’identité française.
