Sayeeda Warsi, ministre anglais chargé des questions religieuses, s’est publiquement inquiétée du sort des Chrétiens d’Orient qui sont même dans certaines régions « en danger d’extinction », a-t-elle rappelé lors d’un discours prononcé à l’université de Georgetown, aux Etats-Unis.
« Je m’inquiète du fait que le berceau du christianisme, cette région du monde où il s’est propagé à l’origine, voie aujourd’hui une grande part de la communauté chrétienne fuir et ceux qui restent être persécutés. Ce qui est tragique, c’est qu’ils sont perçus de nos jours comme des immigrés, traités comme des étrangers alors même qu’ils sont présents dans la région depuis des siècles. », a déclaré le ministre à la BBC.
Dans une tribune publiée par ailleurs par le journal The Telegraph, elle précise encore : « En Irak, la communauté chrétienne a chuté : ils étaient 1,2 million en 1990, ils sont 200.000 aujourd’hui. En Syrie, le bain de sang horrible auquel nous avons assisté a caché l’hémorragie de la population chrétienne dans le pays. Les responsables varient, ce sont tantôt les Etats, tantôt les terroristes, parfois même des voisins.»
