En ce jour, comme tous les 25 avril, se tiennent en Australie, en Nouvelle-Zélande, aux îles Samoa, Tonga et Cook, en Nouvelle-Calédonie, ainsi qu’en Belgique, à Ypres, et en France, à Villers-Bretonneux, des commémorations de la bataille de Gallipoli qui a opposé les soldats de l’Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) aux troupes de l’empire Ottoman, allié de l’Allemagne durant la première guerre mondiale.
Cette bataille fut un désastre pour l’ANZAC dont 8.141 soldats sont morts à Gallipoli.
