Georges Minois est un historien médiéviste renommé. Il nous livre une biographie de Blanche de Castille qui débute par cette épitaphe, écrite en latin sur une plaque de cuivre érigée sur son tombeau, dans l’abbaye de Maubuisson :
Cette Blanche, que la nation française pleure, est sortie de toi, ô Castille, comme une étoile radieuse au firmament. Elle eut pour père le roi Alphonse, pour époux le roi Louis. Devenue veuve de lui, elle gouverna comme régente, afin que la nation pût jouir de la tranquillité. Pendant le voyage d’outre-mer de son fils, elle gouverna comme auparavant. Enfin, celle sous le gouvernement de qui la nation française acquit tant de puissance, se consacra à Jésus-Christ dans son monastère. Si grande auparavant, elle gît aujourd’hui ici sous l’habit d’une pauvre religieuse.
Blanche de Castille (1188-1252) est restée dans l’histoire comme « la mère de Saint Louis ». Fille du roi de Castille Alphonse VIII, belle-fille du roi de France Philippe Auguste, épouse du roi Louis VIII, mère du roi Louis IX, elle n’a jamais été reine de plein droit. Son titre lui vient de son mariage avec le prince Louis, devenu le roi Louis VIII en 1223. Elle a été un personnage important de l’histoire de France, assurant la continuité du pouvoir royal à travers trois règnes. Georges Minois s’efforce de dresser le portrait de cette femme d’influence qui fut l’efficace gardienne du royaume.
