Bernie Sanders, le candidat social-démocrate à la primaire démocrate, opposant d’Hilary Clinton, reçoit un appui de poids : celui du Saint-Siège. En effet, il a annoncé aujourd’hui, lors d’une émission télévisée américaine de la Nbc, qu’il sera au Vatican le 15 avril prochain pour participer à un colloque commémoratif de l’encyclique Centisimus Annus de Jean-Paul II. A quelques heures de la primaire de New-York, test décisif, cette traversée de l’Atlantique témoigne de l’importance que revêt l’influence de François dans la politique mondiale.
Le père Lombardi, après cette annonce, a tout de suite précisé, et cela a été repris par Vatican Insider, que Bernie Sanders était invité par l’Académie Pontificale des Sciences Sociales, institution fondée par Jean-Paul II et dont les membres sont nommés par le pape, et non par François lui-même. Ce qui n’exclut pas l’aval de François…
Né dans une famille juive de Brooklyn, inspiré politiquement par Eugene Debs, candidat marxiste à plusieurs présidentielles du début du XXe siècle, dont le portrait orne depuis toujours son bureau, Bernie Sanders peut se définir comme un socialiste acharné, promoteur d’une couverture universelle à l’européenne, défenseur ardent du mariage gay, du droit à l’avortement, anti-peine de mort, opposé à l’expulsion des immigrés clandestins. Une convergence d’idées avec le pape argentin sur bien des thèmes sociaux.
« Je suis un fan du pape François » a également déclaré Berbie Sanders. « Le pape François a dit clairement que nous devons dépasser la globalisation de l’indifférence pour réduire les inégalités économiques, arrêter la corruption financière et protéger l’environnement. Et ceux-ci sont les véritables défis d’aujourd’hui aux États-Unis et dans le monde. » Et à ceux qui l’accusent d’être trop radical, Bernie répond : « Si vous pensez que Bernie Sanders est un radical, lisez ce qu’écrit le pape… »
A ceux qui croiraient encore que François est conservateur, écoutez Sanders…
