Cathelineau, héros mythique de la guerre de Vendée, méritait bien une bande dessinée en son honneur, afin que les plus jeunes découvrent son épopée.
Surnommé « le saint de l’Anjou », Jacques Cathelineau devient à 34 ans le premier généralissime de la grande armée catholique et royale.
Cette superbe bande dessinée nous retrace son destin à travers le regard de l’abbé Cantiteau, son curé et ami. La foi de Cathelineau a guidé toute son existence et tout particulièrement son engagement à la tête des armées vendéennes. Comment pour ce jeune père de famille très pieux supporter les persécutions des prêtres réfractaires, les brimades, les tirages au sort imposés aux jeunes gens pour fournir des soldats à l’armée républicaine ? Cathelineau prend d’abord l’initiative d’organiser le soulèvement des hommes valides de son village. Ils marchent sur Jallais, recrutant sur leur chemin une foule de paysans, s’emparent du poste militaire et de sa pièce de canon. Une légende commence.
Après plusieurs autres exploits qui construisent son prestige, il est proclamé généralissime de l’Armée catholique et royale par l’assemblée des chefs vendéens le 12 juin 1793.
Lorsqu’il arrive devant Nantes, il est à la tête d’une armée de 40.000 hommes. Hélas, la coordination manque entre lui et Charrette qui devait le seconder avec 10.000 hommes venus du Pays de Retz. Le 29 juin 1793, un coup de fusil l’atteint mortellement.
Ces belles pages de la Chrétienté sont magnifiquement restituées dans cet album au scénario bien construit, fidèlement à la vérité historique, et au dessin vif et détaillé.
Cette BD fera un très joli cadeau pour petits et grands.
