Les islamistes ont assassiné Ovidio Marandy, un jeune catholique de la communauté de Gaibandha (nord du Bangladesh). Natif de la paroisse de Beneedwar (diocèse de Rajshahi), le jeune homme était le frère cadet du père Samson Marandy, prêtre catholique du diocèse de Dinajpur.
Selon son frère et d’autres parents, les islamistes ont voulu « punir » le garçon bien connu dans la communauté catholique. Ces derniers jours, Ovidio avait organisé une manifestation dans son village pour dénoncer la violence des islamistes. Le 5 janvier dernier dans le diocèse de Mymensigh et Rajshahi, des centaines d’islamistes ont attaqué les habitations des chrétiens « coupables » d’avoir voté aux élections.
Le père Proshanto Gomes, prêtre local, souligne que « Ovidio a eu beaucoup de courage et était connu dans sa communauté. Nous sommes choqués par ce qui s’est passé. » Le père Gomes ajoute: «Le vote est un droit des chrétiens. Pourquoi les islamistes nous attaquent-ils ? »
