Les défenseurs de la justice et de la liberté s’étaient réjouis trop vite ! Asia Bibi, cette paysanne catholique, mère de famille nombreuse, emprisonnée depuis près de dix ans et condamnée à mort pour un prétendu « blasphème » contre Mahomet, ne peut pas rejoindre sa famille réfugiée au Canada. Asia Bibi avait pourtant été enfin acquittée par la Cour suprême du Pakistan le 31 octobre, et le juge avait ordonné sa libération « immédiate ». Mais les islamistes, qui ont juré sa mort, avaient aussitôt lancé des manifestations débridées dans tout le pays.
Le Premier ministre pakistanais, Imran Khan, avait d’abord adopté un ton ferme contre les islamistes, prévenant que l’État ne «tolérerait pas le sabotage» et «prendrait ses responsabilités». Mais les trois jours d’émeutes organisées par les islamistes ont eu raison de cette fermeté. Contre la promesse de l’arrêt des manifestations qui paralysaient le pays, le gouvernement pakistanais vient de céder au chantage des islamistes dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi, en décidant que malgré le verdict qui l’innocente totalement, Asia Bibi n’aurait pas le droit de quitter le Pakistan jusqu’à l’issue d’une requête en révision du jugement de la Cour suprême ! En attendant que cette requête soit examinée, Asia Bibi, incarcérée à Multan (au centre du pays), devra demeurer soit en prison, soit dans un autre endroit protégé. Mais existe-t-il au Pakistan un lieu à l’abri de la fureur des islamistes ?
« Je m’y attendais mais ce qui est douloureux, c’est la réponse du gouvernement. Ils ne peuvent même pas faire appliquer un jugement de la plus haute cour du pays » a déploré Saif-ul-Mulook, son avocat. Lui aussi paie son courage au prix fort : ne s’étant vu accorder aucune protection après le verdict, il s’est envolé vers l’Europe, au matin de ce samedi 3 novembre, pour ne pas connaître le sort de deux opposants à la loi anti-blasphème et défenseurs d’Asia Bibi : Salman Tasee, gouverneur (musulman) du Pendjab, et Shahbaz Bhatti, ministre (catholique) des minorités religieuses, tous deux assassinés en plein cœur d’Islamabad, en janvier et mars 2011. « J’ai besoin de rester en vie car je dois poursuivre la bataille judiciaire pour Asia Bibi » a déclaré son avocat.
