Ce traité d’apologétique du Père Auguste-Alexis Goupil a été publié pour la première fois en 1937. Auparavant, les publications du Père Goupil concernaient essentiellement la théologie qui a pour principe les vérités révélées, acceptées par la foi sur l’autorité de Dieu. Tandis que l’apologétique a pour point de départ des vérités connues par la raison et tirées de la philosophie et de l’histoire. Quand la foi était connue et admise par l’ensemble des esprits, la théologie suffisait. L’apologétique est devenue nécessaire quand les fondements de la foi ont été sapés, quand les conditions de l’acte de foi ont été méconnues, quand la démonstration chrétienne a été compromise par des méthodes fausses ou dangereuses. La véritable apologétique vient donc réparer et rétablir le chemin vers la foi.
Le présent ouvrage s’atèle donc à la démonstration de la crédibilité de la foi et montre pourquoi il est sage et raisonnable de croire la doctrine catholique. L’auteur fait pour cela appel au témoignage humain ainsi qu’aux signes divins. Il analyse enfin la méthode d’immanence.
