La Conférence épiscopale vénézuélienne (CEV) a confirmé que le vendredi 1er juillet, quatre élèves du Petit Séminaire de Merida, ont été agressés, frappés puis dépouillés de tout vêtement alors qu’ils étaient sur le chemin du séminaire. Un journaliste qui a assisté à l’attaque a signalé sur Twitter que les séminaristes ont été victimes d’une foule pro-gouvernementale.
L’augmentation de la criminalité, au milieu de la crise économique, sociale et politique que traverse le Venezuela, a placé la capitale, Caracas, en tête des villes les plus violentes dans le monde.
Dans le communiqué publié par la CEV, l’archevêque de Mérida, Mgr Baltazar Porras Cardozo, a indiqué que les quatre jeunes séminaristes « ont été battus, déshabillés et frappés par des a-sociaux qui agissent en toute impunité, car ni la police ni la Garde nationale n’empêchent ces abus. » Le prélat a indiqué que parmi les victimes il y avait deux frères dont le plus jeune a été le plus durement frappé et se trouve à la clinique Albarregas.
