Inde – Loin des convenances laxistes de l’Europe, deux hommes de 20 et 24 ans ont été condamnés a mort pour le viol collectif d’une fillette de 8 ans, qui a suscité une vive émotion dans le pays et entraîné des manifestations de colère.
Le jugement est l’un des premiers à être prononcé en vertu d’une nouvelle loi permettant l’accélération des procédures judiciaires et de la peine de mort pour les viols d’enfants. Au moment des faits il y a deux mois, des foules de manifestants avaient défilé aux cris de « mort aux violeurs ! » après l’agression de la fillette, qui est toujours à l’hôpital dans un état critique. Les violeurs l’avaient attendue devant son école à Mandsaur, dans l’État de Madhya Pradesh (centre), pour l’emmener dans un endroit isolé, la violer et lacérer son cou, la laissant pour morte. Elle a eu la vie sauve grâce à des habitants qui l’ont conduite d’urgence à l’hôpital.
Suite aux vives protestations autour de cas précédents, l’Inde a rendu le viol d’enfant jusqu’à l’âge de huit ans punissable de la peine de mort. La dernière exécution pour viol dans le pays date d’il y a 14 ans à Kolkata, dans l’est de l’Inde. Dhananjay Chatterjee, gardien d’un bâtiment, avait été pendu pour le viol et le meurtre d’une jeune fille de 18 ans en 1990.
Près de 40.000 plaintes pour violences sexuelles ont été déposées en 2016, certaines associations soupçonnant que ce chiffre ne soit que la partie émergée de l’iceberg. Le viol collectif et meurtre d’une étudiante dans un bus de Delhi en 2012 avait entraîné des manifestations dans tout le pays et mis en évidence l’omniprésence des violences sexuelles en Inde.
