Faute de nom officiel, ils avaient un nom officieux, les Idaniens. Jusqu’au 24 juin, l’Ain est l’un des deux départements de France qui n’avait pas de noms d’habitants. On utilisait les noms des pays le composant : Bressans, Dombistes, Bugistes, Gexois…
Ils sont désormais les Aindinois et les Aindinoises. Après deux mois de consultation populaire, le gentilé des habitants de l’Ain a été annoncé dimanche 24 juin lors d’une fête de l’été dans les jardins du Département, à Bourg-en-Bresse. Sur sa page Facebook le conseil départemental avait posté dimanche une photo de ce rassemblement, vu du ciel, proclamant « Tous Aindinois ». Son président Jean Deguerry (LR) avait lancé cette consultation pour « valoriser le département » et « marquer sa volonté d’exister ». Entre le 10 février et le 10 avril, ils ont pu voter pour départager les trois noms proposés par le comité de parrainage. Les autres propositions, Initiain et Ainain n’ont pas séduit les électeurs.
En 2013, les conseils généraux des derniers départements n’ayant pas de gentilés se sont activés pour en donner un. L’Ille-et-Vilaine a baptisé ses habitants les Bretilliens, francisation du breton Breizh-Illien. Le Loiret a choisi Loirétains. L’Ain a donc choisi Aindinois en 2018. Il ne reste plus que le Maine-et-Loire dont les habitants n’ont pas de gentilé, le nom officieux étant Mainoligériens.
