Le cardinal colombien Darío Castrillón Hoyos, Préfet émérite de la Congrégation pour le clergé, ancien président de la Commission pontificale Ecclesia Dei qui s’occupe des fidèles des communautés attachées à la messe tridentine et ralliées à Rome, est décédé entre le nuit du 17 au 18 mai 2018.
Né à Medellín en Colombie, le 4 juillet 1929, il fut un proche du pape Jean-Paul II qui le fait cardinal en 1998 et le nomme à la tête de la Commission Ecclesia Dei en 2000. il fut un protagoniste dans le rapprochement entre le Vatican et la Fraternité Sacerdotale Saint-Pie-X. Notamment, il a ouvert la voie en l’an 2000 aux colloques entre le Saint-Siège et le supérieur de la Fraternité, Mgr Bernard Fellay. C’est lui qui obtint également le ralliement à la Rome conciliaire de Mgr Licinio Rangel et de la communauté traditionaliste de Campos (Brésil), qui fut érigée en administration apostolique.
En 2009, le cardinal âgé de 80 ans démissionne mais continue de travailler comme consultant pour différents dicastères et préfectures du Saint-Siège, et continue à exercer son ministère pastoral.
Avant de mourir il avait exprimé le souhait d’être enterré dans la cathédrale métropolitaine de Medellín, sa ville natale.
