Le rapport annuel de la revue The Economist sur la démocratie dans le monde en 2017, le fameux Democracy Index 2017 vient de paraître, classant de 0 à 10 et en quatre catégories et 9 sous-catégories les pays du monde quant à leur démocratisation, que par commodité nous noterons, de A à E (E étant les dictatures ouvertes). Dans la liste, les pays sont par ordre alphabétique. Le meilleur pays du monde est la Norvège, le pire la Corée du Nord :
- Les pleines démocraties (indice 8 à 10)
- A (9 à 10) : Australie, Canada, Danemark, Finlande, Irlande, Islande, Luxembourg, Norvège, Nouvelle-Zélande, Suède et Suisse.
- A- (8 à 9,99) : Allemagne, Autriche, Espagne, Pays-Bas, Royaume-Uni et
- Les démocraties défectueuses (indice 6 à 7,99)
- B (7 à 7,99) : Afrique du Sud, Belgique, Botswana, Bulgarie, Cap Vert, Chili, Chypre, Corée du Sud, Costa-Rica, Estonie, Etats-Unis, France, Grèce, Inde, Italie, Japon, Lettonie, Lituanie, Panama, Portugal, Slovaquie, Slovénie, Taïwan, Tchéquie et Trinidad & Tobago.
- B- (6 à 6,99) : Argentine, Brésil, Brunei, Colombie, Croatie, République Dominicaine, Equateur, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, Hongrie, Jamaïque, Indonésie, Israël, Lesotho, Malaisie, Mexique, Mongolie, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Paraguay, Pérou, Philippines, Pologne, Roumanie, El Salvador, Serbie, Singapour, Sri Lanka, Surinam, Timor oriental et Tunisie.
- Les régimes anocratiques : (indice 4 à 5,99)

Considérée en état d’anarchie totale, la Somalie n’est plus référencée.
