Le Center for Systemic Peace, basé à Vienna, en Virginie, a mis au point un système de collectes de données permettant de définir le taux de démocratie (au sens océanien) dans le monde. Actuellement, nous somme dans l’ère « Polity IV », ouverte en 1800. L’année charnière dans le monde étant 1990 avec l’effondrement du nombre de régimes dit « autoritaires » et l’accroissement proportionnels de régimes dit « démocratiques », le nombre de régime dits « anocratiques » (pas vraiment l’un et l’autres) ayant légèrement augmenté après avoir été stable entre 1860 et 1990.

Voici l’évolution des nations du monde entre 1976 et 2016 :
