La compilation des données des divers ministères de l’Education mondiaux permet de dresser un portrait schématique mais instructif du niveau d’éducation des pays du globe. Les données sont manquantes pour les pays suivants : Guinée Bissau, Tchad, Erythrée, Sierra Leone, Turkménistan et les divers micros-états.

Taux d’universités élevé (une pour moins de 100.000 habitants) : Etats-Unis, Porto Rico, Belize, Costa Rica, Uruguay, Tunisie, Nouvelle-Zélande, Malaisie, Singapour, Brunei, Bhoutan, Islande, Irlande, Portugal, Suisse, Danemark, Norvège, Pologne, Estonie, Lettonie, Lituanie, Géorgie, Arménie, Chypre, Albanie, Serbie, Croatie, Slovénie, Bosnie.

Très haut taux d’universités (une pour moins de 150.000 habitants) : Canada, Mexique, Jamaïque, Nicaragua, Brésil, Liban, Oman, Iran, Australie, Mongolie, Japon, Corée du Sud, Taiwan, Russie, France, Belgique, Pays-Bas, Luxembourg, Tchéquie, Autriche, Hongrie, Macédoine, Grèce, Bulgarie, Ukraine, Finlande, Moldavie.

Haut taux d’universités (une pour moins de 200.000 habitants) : Salvador, Panama, Colombie, Guyana, Paraguay, Maroc, Israël, Emirats Arabes Unis, Kazakhstan, Espagne, Allemagne, Slovaquie, Monténégro, Roumanie, Biélorussie.

Taux médian d’universités (une pour moins de 300.000 habitants) : Equateur, Surinam, Bolivie, Chili, Royaume-Uni, Italie, Suède, Jordanie, Koweït, Qatar, Azerbaïdjan, Kirghizistan, Timor oriental.

Taux faible d’universités (une pour moins de 500.000 habitants) : Cuba, Dominicaine, Venezuela, Pérou, Argentine, Algérie, Libye, Ghana, Kenya, Somalie, Namibie, Botswana, Afrique du Sud, Turquie, Ouzbékistan, Inde, Thaïlande, Cambodge, Sri Lanka, Philippines.

Taux très faible d’université (une pour moins de 1.000.000 habitants) : Haïti, Guatemala, Honduras, Sénégal, Liberia, Nigeria, Guinée Equatoriale, Ouganda, Rwanda, Zambie, Djibouti, Swaziland, Arabie Saoudite, Irak, Syrie, Tadjikistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Chine, Vietnam, Indonésie.

Pénurie d’universités (une pour plus d’un million d’habitants) : Mauritanie, Gambie, Mali, Guinée, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Niger, Bénin, Togo, Cameroun, Gabon, Congo, République Démocratique du Congo, Centrafrique, Angola, Burundi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzanie, Ethiopie, Soudan, Soudan du Sud, Egypte, Yémen, Népal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, Corée du Nord.

Rappelons que ce sont des données en rapport avec la population, donc moins un pays est peuplé, plus il a des chances d’être haut au classement. L’Islande et ses 330.000 n’a en effet besoin que de 4 universités pour être dans la catégorie 1, alors que la Chine – qui est dans la catégorie 6 – aurait besoin de 13.790 établissements pour y être ! La présence des Etats-Unis dans la catégorie 1, donc un minimum de 3.232 établissements, n’en est que plus méritoire !
