Le 14 septembre, lors de la Fête de l’Exaltation de la Croix, une immense statue de Saint Charbel sera consacrée sur le site de Faraya, au Liban, un fragment de ses os y étant inséré comme sainte relique. Fabriquée par Naef Alwan, elle mesure 27 mètres de haut pour 9,3 mètres de large et pèse 40 tonnes. Elle a été réalisée en fibre de verre pour résister aux intempéries et a été amenée sur son site depuis Haret Sakhr, situé à une trentaine de kilomètres plus à l’ouest. La statue n’est pas encore achevée, il manque les mains du saint qui seront installées une fois la statue sur son socle.
Qui est Saint Charbel ? Il s’agit du Saint Patron du Liban. Saint Charbel – dans le monde Youssef Antoun Makhlouf – naquit le 8 mai 1828 dans le village de Békaa Kafra, à 1’600 mètres d’altitude, près des Cèdres, avec la vue sur la vallée de la Qadisha, surnommée la Vallée sainte. Fils d’une modeste famille de paysans, il devint moine. En 1852, ses supérieurs l’envoient au monastère Saint-Maron, à Annaya, au Mont-Liban, où il entre dans l’Ordre libanais maronite sous le nom de Charbel, l’un des premiers martyrs de l’Eglise d’Antioche du IIe siècle. Sa vie dans le monastère fut consacrée à la prière et au travail. Il s’installa le 15 février 1875 à l’ermitage des saints Paul et Pierre et vécut dans une cellule de six mètres carrés. Il mourut à l’âge 70 ans, le 24 décembre 1898, la veille de Noël. Après sa mort, son corps est resté longtemps intact dans son cercueil et des miracles sont attestés. Saint patron du Liban, Charbel a été béatifié le 5 décembre 1965, puis canonisé le 9 octobre 1977 par le pape Paul VI en la Basilique Saint-Pierre de Rome.
