« Je ne prends pas de café, je prends du thé mon cher, et mes toasts ne sont grillés que d’un côté ». C’est par cette phrase que le chanteur britannique Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, plus connu sous le nom de scène de Sting commence sa chanson Englishman in New York, montrant toute la différence entre l’ancienne métropole et son ancienne colonie.
L’anglais diffère de l’américain, certains mots sont différents dans les deux langues. Le savoir permet d’éviter des déconvenues, comme ce commando allemand des Brandebourg en 1944… Revêtus d’uniformes de l’US Army, roulant dans une jeep de l’US Army, mâchant des chewing-gums de l’US Army, ils se sont fait bêtement arrêter en voulant faire le plein de la voiture alors qu’ils étaient à l’arrière des lignes américaines pour – dit-on – assassiner Eisenhower. A la pompe, ils ont demandé petrol. Enorme erreur. C’est en anglais britannique que l’on demande petrol, un vrai soldat américain aurait demandé gasoline.
Il en est de même pour de multiples objets de la vie courante : on vit dans un flat à Londres, mais dans un apartment à New York. La boîte de conserve se dit tin chez les Anglais, can chez les Américains (d’où le nom en anglais de Rantanplan : Rintincan)… Voici un petit tableau récapitulatif des américanismes dans la vie quotidienne :

Rappelons qu’il existe des différences notables également entre le français et le québécois. Evitez de dire à un Québécois que vous avez une photo de vos gosses, il va vous prendre pour DSK ! En effet, en québécois, « gosses » signifie les testicules. Pour parler de vos enfants, dites « mes flots ». Si vous voulez éviter de rejouer la scène des Brandebourgs en 1944 en vous faisant passer pour des soldats canadiens, à la station-service, ne demandez pas de l’essence mais du gaz. Si vous dite à Montréal que vous mettez une jaquette pour la soirée et que vous voyez le local éclater de rire, ne vous en formalisez pas : dans son pays, jacket désigne la robe de chambre. On ne dit pas un pneu, mais un robeur (pluriel : robeux) et on gare sa voiture (son char en qubécois) dans un stationnement. Quant au film La Grande Vadrouille, qui n’est pas sorti au Canada, le titre aurait du être changé car en québécois, cela signifie… la grande serpillère. Quant aux sacs, c’est l’inverse de l’Europe : au Québec, les hommes ont des « sacs » et les femmes des « sacoches ». De même, quand vous voyez une québécoise proposer de la liqueur à ses enfants, inutile d’appeler la DDASS : c’est le mot local pour désigner les sodas. Au Canada, le classeur désigne le meuble où on les range, le classeur en lui-même s’appelant cartable…
