Le bras de fer entre Londres et Bruxelles s’intensifie. Le chancelier de l’Échiquier du gouvernement britannique, Philip Hammond, pourtant réputé comme modéré, a haussé le ton.
Au cours de l’émission dominicale de la BBC de Andrew Marr, il a averti les partenaires européens que le Royaume-Uni ne se fera pas reléguer dans un coin et que son pays contrecarrera toute attaque :
«Si ceux qui croient que la Grande-Bretagne va se cacher comme un animal blessé, cela ne va pas arriver. Les Britanniques ont un grand esprit de combat, et nous riposterons. »
Philip Hammond se réfère à l’éventualité de l’absence d’entente entre Londres et Bruxelles sur des accords commerciaux au sein du marché unique.
« Nous ferons tout ce qu’il faut pour être compétitifs. »
Londres envisagerait de réduire les taxes pour attirer des investissements étrangers et construire ou renforcer des alliances en-dehors de l’UE. L’idée de Hammond est celle d’un Royaume-Uni auto-suffisant, après l’actualisation du Brexit.
Le député conservateur, John Redwood, anti-UE, va plus loin :
« Si l’UE veut nous imposer des tarifs se sera elle-même qui devra payer, nous nous commercerons sous les règles du WTO (World Trade Organisation). »
L’UE n’a vraiment pas la côte en Grande-Bretagne.
