James O’Neill, chef de la police new-yorkaise (NYPD), a fait savoir que les policiers new-yorkais pourront désormais porter barbes et turbans en accord avec leur croyance religieuse, une mesure revendiquée depuis longtemps par des policiers sikhs et musulmans.
Au cours de son discours devant la nouvelle promotion de l’école de police de New York, James O’Neill a notamment déclaré :
« Nous changeons les règles pour que tous ceux qui veulent postuler pour entrer dans la meilleure police du pays puissent le faire. »
« Nous voulons que le NYPD soit le plus intégré possible, et je crois que cela va beaucoup y contribuer. »
Jusqu’à présent, aux Etats-Unis, seules quelques municipalités comme Washington ou Riverside (Californie) autorisent les signes religieux parmi la police.
Les policiers new-yorkais sikhs qui en feront la demande pourront désormais porter des turbans « de longueur normale », à condition qu’ils soient bleus, alors qu’ils étaient jusqu’ici limités à de petits turbans qui tiennent sous la casquette réglementaire. De même, policiers sikhs et musulmans pourront aussi porter des barbes allant jusqu’à 1,3 centimètre. Ces changements interviennent à la suite d’une plainte déposée par policier musulman suspendu pour avoir porté une barbe non réglementaire.
Des femmes musulmanes avaient déjà été autorisées à porter le hijab.
