Barack Obama et son épouse Michelle ont organisé jeudi à la Maison Blanche, un dîner pour la Pâque juive (Pessah).
Dès 2008, Barack Obama – qui n’était encore qu’un candidat à la présidentielle – avait célébré la fête juive, à l’initiative de trois membres juifs de son équipe de campagne (Herbie Ziskend, Eric Lesser et Arun Chaudhary qui lisaient tour à tour la Haggadah), dans une salle de conférence de l’hôtel Sheraton d’Harrisburg, en Pennsylvanie.
Jeudi, la Maison Blanche a également publié un communiqué du président sortant Barack Obama destiné à honorer l’héritage juif américain.
« Les juifs américains ont joué un rôle déterminant afin de faire en sorte que notre nation reste fidèle à ses principes inscrits dans nos textes fondateurs. Ils ont aidé à amener un progrès durable dans chaque aspect de notre société, modelant le caractère de notre pays et incarnant les valeurs qui nous sont chères. Ce mois-ci, alors que nous rendons hommage à leurs contributions indélébiles, nous renouvelons notre engagement de débarrasser notre monde du sectarisme et de l’injustice et de refléter les moyens extraordinaires par lesquels les juifs américains ont rendu notre Union plus parfaite. »
Barack Obama a rappelé que les Etats-Unis avaient aidé à organiser la première réunion de l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies sur l’antisémitisme l’année dernière, et ajouté qu’ « en célébrant les contributions des juifs américains à notre pays, nous réaffirmons également notre engagement inaltérable à la sécurité d’Israël et les relations étroites entre nos deux nations et nos deux peuples. Pendant toute mon administration, la relation à plusieurs échelons entre nos pays a grandi et s’est renforcée à un degré sans précédent, particulièrement en ce qui concerne l’aide et la coopération militaire israélo-américaine. »
