Selon les nouvelles normes adoptées par le Comité international olympique (CIO), les athlètes « transgenres » devraient avoir le droit de participer aux Jeux olympiques et aux autres compétitions internationales sans avoir subi un changement de sexe chirurgical, ce qui équivaut à ouvrir les compétitions féminines aux travestis.
En entrevue avec l’Associated Press dimanche, le directeur médical du CIO a déclaré que la politique avait été changée afin qu’elle reflète l’évolution[ndlr : plutôt la révolution] des mentalités sur le plan scientifique, social et légal concernant cette question.
Ces normes ne sont pas des règles, mais bien des recommandations que pourront suivre ou non les fédérations sportives et les autres organisations. Elles devraient déjà s’appliquer aux Jeux Olympiques de Rio de Janeiro cette année 2016.
Selon les anciennes normes du CIO adoptées en 2003, les athlètes effectuant la transition d’homme à femme ou vice-versa devaient changer chirurgicalement de sexe après avoir suivi deux ans de thérapie hormonale pour obtenir le droit de prendre part aux compétitions. Maintenant, l’opération n’est plus requise.
Les athlètes passant de femme à homme pourront participer aux épreuves masculines sans restriction alors que ceux qui font la transition d’homme à femme devront prouver que leur taux de testostérone est en dessous d’un certain seuil depuis au moins un an avant leur première compétition.
Rien n’est encore prévu pour les athlètes « intersexes » et autres « agender » imaginés par la théorie du genre.
