Emmanuel Thiébot est historien au Mémorial de Caen, en charge de la programmation culturelle du musée. Il est spécialiste de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et de l’histoire de la franc-maçonnerie.

Prévenons d’emblée : son livre Qui sont les francs-maçons ? ne se classe pas parmi les livres antimaçonniques. Il se situe plutôt dans le registre de la documentation utile. En effet, il fourmille d’informations issues de deux siècles d’archives des loges elles-mêmes. Chaque réunion maçonnique, appelée tenue, fait l’objet d’un compte-rendu détaillé, un « tracé » en langage maçonnique. C’est à partir de tels documents qu’Emmanuel Thiébot a rédigé ce livre.  

On y rappelle qu’en 1771, le duc de Chartres, futur duc d’Orléans, puis Philippe-Egalité, est élu grand maître du Grand Orient de France (GODF). On y lit que, lors de la Première Guerre mondiale, les francs-maçons caennais ont réclamé l’envoi sur le front de tous les prêtres servant dans les hôpitaux. Une archive maçonnique de 1924 nous fait penser à des faits récents : déjà, des maçons s’offusquaient de l’achat d’un crucifix pour une école. Un article publié en 1931 par Voline, un poète et militant libertaire ukrainien d’origine juive, parle de la compatibilité entre la franc-maçonnerie et l’anarchisme. Un discours prononcé le 28 mars 1909 lors de « la tenue de la fête solsticiale de la Vraie Fraternité au GODF d’Agen » évoque l’implication de tous les francs-maçons dans l’affaire des fiches (le fichage des officiers catholiques) : « Tout le monde est fichard (…) Renseigner est un devoir (…)« . Léo Campion, membre du Grand Orient de France, écrit en 1969 un livre intitulé Les Anarchistes dans la franc-maçonnerie dans lequel il considère que la vocation libertaire de la franc-maçonnerie est indéniable. En 1901 est créée au sein du GODF la loge parisienne L’Action Socialiste, résultat de l’immixtion entre franc-maçonnerie et pouvoir politique.

L’ouvrage rapporte aussi le discours de Jacques Chirac, petit-fils d’instituteur franc-maçon, tenu en 2003, lorsque, président de la république, il reçut officiellement les responsables de toutes les obédiences maçonniques.

Un large chapitre est bien sûr consacré au combat de la franc-maçonnerie contre l’Eglise catholique.

Tout l’intérêt de ce livre est de se limiter à citer des documents maçonniques. On n’y trouvera pas de révélations extraordinaires mais néanmoins matière à argumenter.
