Etats-Unis – L’église grecque orthodoxe qui était érigée près des tours jumelles de New York a également été détruite le 11 septembre 2001. Elle sera reconstruite selon les plans de l’architecte espagnol Santiago Calatrava. La construction est prévue pour la fin 2016/2017, selon les médias locaux.
Le projet a été béni lors d’une cérémonie religieuse en présence des autorités locales. Les détails du futur édifice, construit à côté du Memorial World Trade Center, ont été dévoilés à cette occasion.
La nouvelle église Saint-Nicolas sera une simple structure blanche avec des formes inspirées par l’iconographie byzantine classique, comme on le voit dans une vidéo de présentation posté par « The Wall Street Journal. »
Une fois terminée, l’église, grâce à son marbre blanc et son éclairage par des ampoules LED, brillera dans l’obscurité. Elle remplacera la vieille église, plus humble, construite au début du XXe siècle par des immigrants grecs, et qui a été le seul édifice religieux détruit le 11 septembre 2001. Le bâtiment d’origine de quatre étages abritait une congrégation d’environ 70 familles et les responsables avaient promis sa reconstruction.
Le nouvel édifice s’élèvera sur un emplacement distinct de l’ancien, plus près du mémorial, et grâce aux dons recueillis au cours de ces dernières années. Le budget s’élèvera à environ 38 millions d’euros.
Cette création n’est pas la première de l’architecte espagnol Calatrava aux Etats-Unis puisqu’il a également réalisé la nouvelle station de train du World Trade Center, qui devrait être achevée l’an prochain.
