La dictature du « politiquement correct » s’est trouvée une nouvelle cible. Amazon et iTunes Prime considèrent que les dessins animés de Tom et Jerry contiennent des scènes de « préjugés ethniques et raciaux. » C’est ce que dit l’avertissement sur la plateforme de vidéo en ligne lorsque vous sélectionnez les épisodes des personnages mythiques des dessins animés américains.
« Les courts-métrages de Tom et Jerry peuvent présenter certains préjugés raciaux et ethniques qui étaient autrefois communs dans la société américaine. Ces représentations étaient mauvaises et le sont encore aujourd’hui.«
Cet avertissement apparaît avant chaque épisode de Tom et Jerry, personnages créés par William Hanna et Joseph Barbera, à la fin des années quarante.
La critique porte notamment sur les scènes de cannibalisme ainsi que sur la présence dans certains épisodes d’une domestique noire, appelée Mammy Two Shoes. Mais il est aussi question du « sexisme » et du tabagisme, autres sujets tabous.
Dans les DVD du dessin animé, c’est l’actrice noire Whoopi Goldberg qui est chargée de prononcer l’avertissement similaire.
