Créée en 1915, la Croix de guerre est une décoration novatrice qui a durablement impacté le paysage des récompenses françaises et étrangères, jusqu’à aujourd’hui. L’exposition « Honneur aux braves ! ». La Croix de guerre en présente l’histoire et la postérité.
Dès les premiers combats de l’été 1914, une carence est vite apparue dans le système de récompenses français pour distinguer les combattants méritants. Ce n’est pourtant qu’en avril 1915, après de vifs débats, que fut créée la Croix de guerre, qui deviendra le symbole même du Poilu victorieux. Attribuable à tous, elle permet de matérialiser les citations de différents niveaux témoignant de la bravoure militaire.
Plus de 1,2 millions de citations furent attribuées au titre de la Première Guerre mondiale, engendrant l’attribution de la Croix de guerre à des militaires de tous grades mais aussi des civils, hommes et femmes, des personnes morales (villes et unités militaires) et même des animaux ! Très présente dans le paysage mémoriel de la Grande Guerre, cette récompense, simple mais répondant parfaitement aux besoins nés de la guerre, a engendré la création d’autres Croix de guerre, tant à l’étranger qu’en France, à l’occasion de conflits postérieurs. Ainsi, plus d’un siècle après sa création, la Croix de guerre reste non seulement une décoration particulière dans le paysage des récompenses honorifiques, mais aussi un concept et un symbole.
