Un navire, transportant près de 600 personnes, majoritairement des Syriens selon les autorités maltaises, avait été repéré samedi dans les eaux entre la Libye et Malte par un cargo danois croisant à environ 80 milles (148 km) au large de Lampedusa. Les militaires maltais immédiatement alertés ont demandé l’assistance des garde-côtes italiens pour les aider à secourir les demandeurs d’asile à bord du bateau en bois de 25 mètres. Les 566 survivants, dont les parents de l’enfant mort, sont arrivés dans le port italien de Messina à bord du cargo danois qui leur avait porté assistance. Malgré tout, trente d’entre eux sont morts. Selon les autorités militaires maltaises, les migrants « ont pu être piétinés » au cours d’une bousculade à bord du bateau au moment du sauvetage tandis que les secours italiens estiment qu’ils auraient été victimes des gaz d’échappement toxiques de leur embarcation.
Les arrivées d’embarcations de migrants ont fortement augmenté ces dernières semaines en raison des conditions météorologiques estivales favorables et de l’absence de contrôle des flux migratoires depuis la Libye. Des centaines de migrants sont interceptés quotidiennement par les autorités italiennes. Près de 80.000 auraient déjà accosté en Italie cette année et leur nombre devrait largement dépasser cette année le record de 63.000 établi en 2011 au plus fort du « Printemps arabe ». La plupart des migrants qui tentent de rejoindre l’Europe par la mer à tout prix viennent d’Erythrée, de Somalie et de Syrie mais aussi d’Asie et d’Afrique sub-saharienne.
