Dans la nuit du 16 au 17 juillet 1918 étaient exécutés par les bolcheviques, à Ekaterinbourg, dans la maison Ipatiev, le tsar Nicolas II, son épouse, ses cinq enfants et quatre suivants. Considérés depuis longtemps comme étant des martyrs, les membres de la famille Romanov assassinés en 1918 ont été canonisés et proclamés « saints martyrs impériaux de Russie » en 2000 par le patriarche de Moscou Alexis II.
Cette année, la commémoraison de ces saints martyrs impériaux a donné lieu à une messe célébrée au cœur de la nuit, en plein air, devant l’église sur le sang d’Iekaterinbourg érigée sur l’emplacement de la maison Ipatiev. A l’issue de la célébration liturgique, un peu avant quatre heures du matin, ce 17 juillet, ce ne sont pas moins de 60 000 Russes qui ont participé à la procession et ont suivi le parcours des restes des saints martyrs de la famille impériale, soit 21 kilomètres jusqu’au monastère de Galina Yama, construit sur le lieu de leur incinération. C’est avec le soleil déjà bien haut dans le ciel que cette nuit de piété populaire s’est terminée avec un office d’intercession aux martyrs impériaux.
