L’église mormone va offrir 200.000 dollars à l’Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) pour venir en aide aux demandeurs d’asile aux Etats-Unis.
Fondée en 1881, l’Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society apporte son soutien aux dizaines de milliers d’immigrés qui affluent actuellement aux Etats-Unis. Un appel en faveur des immigrés lancés par l’HIAS avait été signé par un millier de rabbins.
L’évêque mormon Dean Davies, de l’Eglise des Saints des Derniers Jours, s’est rendu au bureau de l’HIAS à Washington pour remettre le chèque de 200.000 dollars.
« Le travail que nous faisons à l’HIAS découle de notre expérience juive en tant que réfugiés nous-mêmes », a déclaré Mark Hetfield, président de cette organisation. « Nous savons que les Mormons, eux aussi, ont subi la même expérience. Cela rend le don qui a été fait pour venir en aide aux réfugiés d’une importante signification ».
La proximité des Mormons avec la communauté juive est très ancienne. Une délégation de Mormons s’est rendue il y a quelques jours au cimetière du mont des Oliviers à Jérusalem pour commémorer la prière du chef Mormon Orson Hyde en 1841 qui avait consacré Jérusalem en tant que site revenant au peuple juif.
Parmi les dirigeants juifs présents se trouvait l’ancien sénateur américain Joseph Lieberman du Connecticut.
