L’officier Rafael Ramos était assis sur le siège du conducteur. L’officier Wenjian Liu était à ses côtés.
Les deux policiers ne patrouillaient pas dans leur quartier habituel – normalement, cette patrouille est affectée au centre-ville de Brooklyn, mais ils avaient été envoyés dans une zone à la criminalité plus élevée, a indiqué la police.
C’est là qu’ils ont été tués, pris dans une embuscade, samedi après-midi alors qu’ils étaient assis dans leur voiture de patrouille.
Le tireur s’est approché du côté passager de la voiture de patrouille et a tiré. Il a ouvert le feu à plusieurs reprises, frappant les deux officiers dans la tête.
« Ils ont été tout simplement assassinés. », a déclaré le commissaire en chef de New York.
Le tireur a ensuite été retrouvé mort dans une station de métro à proximité après s’être suicidé.
La police a identifié le tireur, il s’appelle Ismaaiyl Brinsley.
A cet instant, il n’y a aucune indication que Brinsley soit relié à des groupe terroriste.
La police enquête sur les messages que Brinsley aurait tenus sur les réseaux sociaux.
Il y avait posté au moins un message menaçant de tuer des policiers, message retrouvé sur un compte Instagram à son nom, relié aux décès des Afro-Américains Michael Brown et Eric Garner qui ont été suivis de nombreuses manifestations à travers tous les USA, créant un climat de tensions raciales exacerbées.
